U6 Soccer Training
When coaching U6 soccer you should focus on creating positive experiences for the young minds of the players you coach. Technical and tactical development are less important at this age than simply getting a player touches on the ball with their feet and creating an enjoyable environment to which they want to return the following week.
Personality, energy and body language take a precedent over intricate soccer knowledge and your primary focus should be to get the young players excited about the game of soccer. Below are some fun drills you can use to teach 6 year olds and get them familiar with the ball at their feet.
From a physical training standpoint be careful with your approach. Studies have shown that athletes that specialize in a given sport too soon are not as well off as though that are provided a myriad of athletic experiences. Give your young athletes a wide range of athletic experience at a young age. And as they grow older they can specialize in soccer. We did a survey on Youth Soccer Skills about whether you can specialize an athlete too soon. Some readers thought you cannot specialize too soon while the majority understood the reality.
Plan your sessions thoroughly when coaching U6 soccer players. Even 1 or 2 minutes of down time can lead to you losing the attention of a group at this age. Have some back up plans to go to if a game is not working and the group do not understand. Over time you will learn the favorite games of the group that you know players will enjoy. Give water breaks every 10-15 minutes at this age.
