20 Soccer Goal Scoring Tips

Goal scoring is one of the most vital skills a soccer player can possess. If you have the ability to score goals you are a match-winning player, and a valuable commodity to possess. Goal scoring requires confidence, execution and lots of repetition in practice. Here, we give you 20 tips that will help you become a great goal scorer;

  1. Be positive. People who are afraid to miss, tend to not score goals. Focus on getting as many shots on target as possible, and the rest will take care of itself.
  2. Find space. Standing around next to defenders means you will be shut out easily. Stay active and look to find a few yards of space.
  3. Shoot early. Getting shots away either first time or quickly after you control the ball can increase your chances of scoring.
  4. Think ahead. Do not receive the ball and then think about shooting, make your runs and movements with the intention of shooting as soon as you receive the ball.
  5. Play in behind the defense. Checking towards the ball is a good way to receive the possession, but if you want to score goals you should get inside the penalty area as often as you can.
  6. Play on the shoulder of the last defender. Many strikes receive passes and then try and dribble past defenders. Hang on the shoulder of the defender and look for through balls that release you clean through on goal.
  7. Get on the end of crosses. When the ball is out wide, rather than following it get on front of the goal in a position to score.
  8. Play between the goal posts. You must move side to side during a game, but strikers who constantly make their runs to the corners can find themselves struggling to score. Make sure you receive enough of the ball in a position to produce dangerous shots.
  9. Follow in teammates shots. You never know when a goalkeeper is going to spill a ball, so follow in all shots that a teammate fires in and look for rebounds.
  10. Aim for the side netting. Shots that go into the corners of the goal are more difficult for goalkeepers to reach with a diving save.
  11. Use power and finesse when needed. From 20 to 25 yards out, you will have to drive in a shot with power. If you are clean through with only the goalkeeper to beat, it may be best to side foot a finesse finish past the goalkeeper.
  12. Be loud. If you want the ball then you must shout to get a teammates attention loud enough to receive a pass.
  13. Receive balls in motion. Do not stand still asking for a pass, accelerate into space and point to where you want the ball played in.
  14. Be aware of the offside line. Look for through balls but know where the last defender is, every offside decision against you is a scoring opportunity gone.
  15. Practice lots of repetitions. Stay behind after practice and hit 50 to 100 shots every day. If possible, have a teammate practice with you to serve balls, or act as a goalkeeper or a defender.
  16. Develop both feet. Having the ability to use both feet increases your chances of scoring goals in different situations.
  17. Develop the ability to use different surfaces. Practice finishing with a header, or having the ability to chest balls under control before beating the goalkeeper.
  18. Practice finishing with balls at different heights. Practice repetitions with high balls, bouncing balls and balls thrown at different heights. Finish on the volley, half volley, and learn to hit awkwardly bouncing balls.
  19. Watch the professionals. Watch professional strikers play and make notes on how they do it. What runs do they make, how do they communicate? Incorporate what you learn into your own game.
  20. Show humility and respect. It is a myth that goal scorers need to have a selfish attitude. Be a good teammate, after you score congratulate the player who gave you the assist, make your success a source of enjoyment for the team.
