Best Soccer Moves?

In this article written by Stewart Flaherty you decide if you think these two moves are the best.

Soccer moves used for possession only require a player to create a couple of yards, or even angle to release a pass or shot. Common soccer moves used to keep possession are hook turns and the brag back.

Inside Hook and Outside Hook

The inside hook is performed by hooking the foot around the ball and using the knuckle of the big toe to hook the ball at a 90 degree angle away from pressure. The outside hook is a similar soccer move performed by using the knuckle of the pinky toe to hook the ball away from the defender at a 90 degree angle. When hooking the ball away from pressure you can shield it. For example with defensive ressure coming from your left, an outside hook performed the right foot will drag the ball away from the defender, and allow you to use your body as a barrier preventing a tackle.

Drag Back

The Drag Back turn is performed by placing the sole of the foot on top of the ball and dragging it back while turning away from pressure. The player should turn with the ball and keep the ball in front of him at all times. Players should never have the ball behind them or lose sight of the ball during a drag back turn.

Action Plan

  • Practice turns on your won with a ball. Use a tree or cone as defensive pressure to turn away from.
  • Have 1 v 1 competitions with a friend. Play in a 10 yard box and score a point by stopping the ball on the line behind the defender.
  • Develop a range of moves, practice a new move every week, performing 50-100 repetitions against passive resistance, such as a cone or tree.
  • Recognize matchups during a game. If you have the speed advantage over your opposite defender, take him on to penetrate. If you are struggling to get behind, perform a soccer move to create space before passing and moving again.
