Defending in a 4 4 2 Soccer Formation

A 4-4-2 formation is very commonly used in soccer. The formation provides balance and width in attack and defense. The two lines of four are a very effective form of defense when a team holds its defensive shape in this formation. The key to becoming a great defensive team in the 4-4-2 is not just knowing your position, but knowing how to adjust to avoid being caught on the counter attack if the ball is given away. Great defensive teams quickly recover their shape and give very little space to the opposition when defending. Every position on the field has an important defensive role to play in a 4-4-2.

Goalkeeper

As well as the obvious shot stopping duties, a goalkeeper must know the formation well enough to communicate effectively. If a fullback joins the attack a goalkeeper must slide the defense over as explained later in the article. A goalkeeper must also recognize 2 v 1 or 3 v 2 mismatches and communicate to adjust team shape in the correct manner.

Defenders

The back four must communicate effectively and play as a unit in a 4-4-2 formation. The two central defenders are responsible for covering forwards when they are in a central position. If the forwards make runs out to the flanks the centre back should pass them on to the full back rather than be sucked wide. On a similar note, if a forward checks deep into midfield to receive the ball, the defender should communicate with a midfielder in front to avoid being sucked too high. Diagram A below illustrates the danger of this. X5 is sucked too high by O9 and a through ball to O10 is a big threat;

In this situation X5 would communicate with a midfielder in front and have them pick up O9. This allows the back line to keep their shape.

A flat back line in a 4-4-2 can also use the offside rule to their advantage if they communicate effectively. A centre back should be careful leaving runners get past assuming they are offside. To truly establish the line a centre back would have to look left, then right and le the runner go. Centre backs do not have time to do that in the heat of a game where 1 or 2 steps can be the difference between being in position and being beaten. Full backs who are in the best position to see the entire line should be responsible for communicating to centre backs to leave runners if they are offside.

Midfield

Midfielders must provide ball pressure and track runs defensively in a 4-4-2 formation. Midfielders should pressure the ball while the other players cut out easy ball forward. In diagram B below X6 is pressuring the ball. X8 is taking up a position that allows him to cover O6 if the ball is passed, while also cutting out a ball into the feet of O10. X11 is cutting out the pass up to O7 who is covered by X3;

If an opposition midfielder runs forward the midfielder must track the run to avoid mismatches along the back line. For example in diagram B if O6 joined the attack and was not tracked by X8, then X4 and X5 will find themselves outnumbered 3 against 2. However if O11 runs forward X7 can communicate and pass him onto X2 who has no player to cover yet. This will allow X7 to start a counter attack if the defensive team wins possession.

Forwards

Forwards must play a role in team defending for an effective 4-4-2 formation. Similar to midfielders one attacker should pressure the ball, while the other cuts out an easy forward pass to the midfield. Forwards should split the field width wise. For example, if both attackers pressure the left side of defense then a quick switch of play to the right flank will allow the right back to advance unchallenged and create mismatches further down the field. A good idea is for one forward to take responsibility for the left back and one centre back, while the other takes responsibility for the right back and the other centre back.

ACTION PLAN

  • Learn the roles and responsibility of each position.
  • Explain the system to every player.
  • Rehearse specific defensive and attacking situations in practice.
  • Encourage players to ask whenever they do not understand things.
