Ball Control Headquarters
The glamour of soccer is usually in scoring the ball. Soccer organizations have created awards around the highest scorer like the golden boot award.
But, with all the fanfare surrounding scoring, coaches and players need work on this skill. In the passing section I talked about passing being the key to linking the team together. But, in reality, linking a team together requires far more than just passing. What good is a great pass if the receiving player cannot control it, even under pressure. So linking a team so players play together requires ball control as well.
Coaches and players need to make this part of the youth soccer players development. Its at the very core of being a good soccer. Take these scenarios for example. Player A passes to you hoping for a give and go but you lose ball. Player B passes to you in the box for a wide open shot only to see the ball bounce off your foot and turned over to a team. You see, receiving is the intermediate step to the next phase; passing, shooting, dribbling etc.
