4 4 2 Soccer Formation
This formation is possibly the most widely used soccer formation. This section will help you better understand this popular formation to better coach it and decide if its right for your team.
4-4-2 Set Up
The 4 4 2 is set up with four defenders (two central defenders and two fullbacks), Four midfielders (two central midfielders and two outside midfielders), and two forwards. As with other formations the 442 comes with several strengths and weaknesses. You will learn about those more in the 442 Soccer Formation Fundamentals article below.
In that its critical to understand each section of the 4 4 2 formation I will briefly explain each. This should give you a good understanding on the concept of the positions in this formation.
Forwards
Scoring is the obvious duty for the forwards. But they are also required to play some defense by applying pressure high up the field.
Midfielders
On defensive side of the ball the midfielders are very active in that they will play defense all over the field of play.
Defenders
Because there are four defenders on the back line they can easily cover the back from sideline to sideline. In addition, the fullbacks will push forward into the attack to provide support.
